STELLA IM HULTBERG

Photobucket

Stella is a talented young artist from NYC currently living in Brookyln. I discovered her work a few years ago in natural connection with Audrey Kawasaki's (also amazing!). Her larger paintings mainly use watercolour, ink or oils on textured paper. I love her use of easy flowing lines and the depth of colour she manages to build up with thin layers of watercolour. At the same time her work isn't too heavy and in your face but soft, delicate and feminine (like Lilly Piri, check her out too!). To me Stella is the epitome of a modern day Pre-Raphealite; painting beautiful women in soft settings and flattering lights. She isn't trying to make any sweeping feminist statements, just drawing and painting women in their natural beauty. LOVE.

"When I begin a painting, I don’t start with a clear idea or message. The early stages are abstract and vague and the work then develops organically as I paint. There’s no specific concept but a blurry idea I try to clarify as each layer of paint is built up.

An underlying unifying theme of identities and duality seems to permeate much of my work. Identity as a human being, the frail and the strong; identity as an individual; identity in relation to others or the environment; and even dual, overlapped, confused identities.

The process of creating a painting is what intrigues me most, like finding pieces of a puzzle. The figures (women) in my paintings are a vessel through which I can connect with the world. The unseen moments, the unspoken words, the indescribable emotions that permeate much of our lives… those are the elements I try to capture and represent through the figures in my work. "

I find her sketchbook work particularly inspiring as I try to keep a regular sketchbook myself (scans soon if anything worthwhile surfaces) and I think sketches are the where the true skill of an artist can be found. See?

Snapshot of a Ghost

My name is Jasmin but I've always liked boys with girls' names and names that end in -ie.
I'm an insomniac. I like to stay up late to watch the sky change from blue to black to beige and blue again. I'm a critically indecisive realist whose in love with the little things. I enjoy writing lists and schedules but never stick to them. I want to learn to do a million things like speak Swedish, play guitar, skateboard, hula hoop and play poker. My mind is always turning over a million things but I am a simple girl and I never ask for much. I'm a typical nerd and I'm excited by fashion, photography, books, ideas and theories. I could pour through books and magazines until my eyes dribbled down my face in a torrent of glitter and sequins. It's true. I like to paint what I write, write what I think and photograph what I see.
