Yes, I am the most horribly sporadic blogger in the universe. Totally my fault. I was about to blog the other day and my mum said "Hurry up! It's just a blog. It's not good for anything." So naturally I stopped blogging for awhile and moped. I am so one of those bite my nose off just to spite my face kind of people. Pathetic, I know. But anyways I promise to post extra wonderful things in the coming week. I really want to make this blog into soemthing worthy of being in my fashion journalism applications portfolio. Any tips? Give me an email.
Firstly I want to talk about 'Mammoth' by Lucas Moodyson.
Gael Garcis Bernal + Michelle Williams are an amazing duo for any project but put Moodyson at the helm and it's not a surpise that it already has award nominations. I must confess that I'm a sucker for any kind of indie/sundance/Cannes film festival nominees. Harrowing, indie, funny films with quirky casts & striking cinematography coupled with wonderful soundtracks and you've got me trapped. Though this film looks like a giant step up in funding compared to the other Moodyson films I've seen and loved. 'Lilya-4-Ever'. Possibly the most depressing film ever.
It's literally one of my favourite films ever but I couldn't watch it over and over because that would no doubt end with suicide due to how harrowing and unforgiving the plot is. It's a dirty, bleak portrait of child trafficking from Russia to Sweden (Moodyson's homeland & my dreamland) which is a reality for more children than the government would like to admit. The main actress Oksana Akinshina's performance is beyond anything that other teen actresses seem to manage in the blockbusters that pack out cinemas across the globe.
'Together'(Tilsammans) Uplifting satirical comedy set in the 70's that looks at radical views on politics & social revolution.
Despite the difference between this and 'Lilya-4-Ever' I loved this just as much, possibly more. The script was fresh and funny but not too over-elaborate. The characters were relatable despite their extremist views. Also the ginger guy who plays her brother also plays Bruno's smitten assistant. I never kenw that but then again I didn't notice until this weekend that 'Role Models' sarcastic Paul Rudd was the step-brother in classic chick flick 'Clueless'.
And one more my-kind-of-movie 'That Evening Sun' by Scott Teems. The plot doesn't look particulary rivetting or multi-layered but it strikes me as more of a character study. I love character studies. Characters studies set among atmospheric Tennessee that have won several awards like Best Narrative feature and I lap it up. It reminds me of 'Down In The Valley' (starring Evan Rachel Wood, Cory Culkin & Edward Norton-brilliant-see it!) crossed with the style of 'Little Children' (starring Jennifer Connely, Kate Winslet, Jackie Earl Haley & Patrick Wilson-amazing narrative-see it!) And that's me over and out for today lovers but I've left you with some quality watching so go off and exercise those eyes and ears. I am off to town to have the side of my head reshaved, eyebrows done, hand out cvs & shop around with the mama. Adios!
A beautiful shoot including Lydia Hearst in Harpers Bazaar Russia October 09. I love the glamorous grunge. Loving the last shot-like a burning fire in my heart loving it. Oh yes. And another shoot from L'Officiel Netherlands with model Marloes Horst. She is so beautiful. It's little more hippie folk than grunge but I love the mixture of textures all the same. Definitely something I'll be chanelling from winter through spring. I always die a little inside once summer rolls around and I can't put on half of my wardrobe anymore. The trees stop dying and your style does instead. Rest in peace-sticky, boiling peace or in the case of England, with occasional showers.
Now off to creative writing class I trot. I'll be back in a few hours with a post or two more. Have a good afternoon people.
Our world clings to the world of celebrity like a badge or a black eye-something to be nationally proud of-faces for wherever they have come from-hence why their reputation & representation is so important. The young and the old whether they like to admit to it could probably not deny looking up to a celebrity at some point. There are a fair few of them that I admire not just for their looks and their style but for their talent and their composure. Are there any celebrities that you watch and find yourself wanting to steal an attribute like a magpie might a shiny coin? I bet there is. The next time you find yourself falling in love with a face from the silver screen have a think why that is-what little quirks or personality traits do they have that you wish you could loan for a little while?
My love for a certain Megan Fox is no secret-my love for her however has much more to do with her outspoken audaciousness than her perfect presentation. I like the way that she can laugh at herself and isn’t afraid to say what she wants even if it is admitting that a performance was not her best or that she’s horribly insecure in herself.
Another love is Emma Watson of Harry Potter fame. I used to hate her when I was younger. She was intelligent, cute, short, liked reading and hockey- we were one of the same but she was better because she was a confident, young actress-and you know she got to hang out with Alan Rickman ha. That’s bound to make me hate anyone. But as she grew up and took off for Brown she’s sort of made me think about what I want to do. By a twist of fate she grew up an actress in a popular series of franchise films but that’s not necessarily where she wants her life to go. I like the fact that she’s not quite sure either but she’s gone off to continue her education and left her options open.
Oh and I also love Kristen Stewart. It’s strange because when she acts in Twilight she irritates the hell out of me. I assume that that’s just because I loathe the whole thing deep down in my bones. I’ve seen her in a film called ‘Speak’ and I loved it and her in it. She’s one of those people where when I listen to her speak or watch her in an interview-she seems like someone I could befriend. She’s awkward and quiet and just a little bit weird...and an actress. It seems like an odd combination but I think she makes it work and I like that.
And finally a secret confessed. My guilty pleasure for a few years now has been a television show called ‘Girls of the Playboy Mansion’. I know-I know. Chauvinists and their plastic harlots shouldn’t be any kind of joyful entertainment for women of this day and age etc but despite their lack of intellectual credentials...I grew to adore them for how outgoing, fun and lovable they were. But I suppose there’s little space to be embarrassed about little things when you are getting certain other things out in front of photographers on a daily basis...Still my point stands. I wish that there was a way to study other people and take a little of them away with you in order to improve but not change who you are. But if I knew just how to do that, I’d be an actor too wouldn’t I?
It's technically Sunday now so here's some celebrity faces who have caught my eye recently for whatever reason. We should probably start with Megan Fox. The more I see her and the paler her California tan gets, the more I adore her. Her style and her perfectly executed makeup just kills me everytime. Though I must say she does look a little un-natural all grunged up for this shoot for NYLON. I'm so used to seeing her in Armani couture, slit to the thigh and perfectly groomed. Then of course I found this picture of her and Robert Pattinson. Can you imagine the media explosion if they ever started seeing one another? And dear God would their babies be beautiful? I mean look at them...as much as I do occassionally try and convince myself that Robert is unattractive...it's just not true. Then again his general scruffiness may act in his favour. I do love his big unkempt hair and his beautiful guitar strumming vocals. Another beautiful brunette, newly discovered model Charlotte Lohman. Gorgeous. I've always been envious of dark haired girls with light eyes. Another dark haired, light eyed beauty: Mila Kunis. Here she is at the Emmy's recently. I loved her dress, makeup and hair. Some queens of the British media for you now: geek chic Alexa Chung & national darling Emma Watson. Alexa looks great as usual but Emma actually shocked me. She's as well put together as always but her long, great legs seemed to come out of nowhere. Stunning in new season Burberry. And because the more I see of Emma these days despite her recent educational pursuits taking her out of the spotlight the more I love her, here's an old picture of her at a Cartier International Polo Day last year. The red lips and white dress and so classy with the swept back chignon and pearls. Now for some hair envy: Isabel Lucas & Rose Byrne + Miranda Kerr & Lily Aldridge. Model time! I always seem to be saving street style photographs of my favourite models. ABK <3 + Freja Beha <3 & Lily Donaldson during fashion week in NY. OH and Irina & Freja Beha backstage with Erin Wasson at her RVCA fashion show. Looking fun and cute Then Kasia Struss strutting about in all black and Frida Gustavsson in some outfit amazingness. Snejana Onopka backstage at Alexander Wang's SS 2010 show. I loved the sideswept braids and Sneja in general. She's so gorgeous. Evelina Mambetova (from the Tim Walker shoot below) with Ranya Mordanova. Mhmm Russian baby faced love! It always shocks me just how much softer Ranya looks when not on the runway. In candid shots she just seems so much more girl next door and less edgy fashion monster. Actors last and not least. An adorable french actress named Lea Seydoux that I've never heard of but is stupidly cute in a Gemma Ward sort of way <3 Colin Farrell shot by Greg Williams. I loved him in 'Phonebooth' and 'In Bruges'. Especially 'In Bruges', after one watch it became one of my favourite films of all time. Go and check it out. I'll post the trailer below but seriously watch it. You'll laugh until you cry and then you'll cry and then you'll feel horribly uncomfortably sad and then you'll forget all about that because you'll be laughing again.
Wow has it really been that long since my last update? Apologies. I've been itching to post having amassed tons of things to post about in the last few weeks but work, creative writing class, payday and being generally socially retarded have taken up my life lately. I'm back now though and it's Saturday so enjoy some recent work of one of my ultimate favourite photogrpahers and general geniuses Tim Walker. In this much loved shoot for Harpers Bazaar US Tim pays homage to my other favourite genius Tim, director Tim Burton <3 It's a match made in gothic, melancholic, fantasy heaven(Hades). Models featured are Sophie Srej, Malgosia bela and new favourite nymphette faced Evelina Mambetova. I totally adore her in the shot below where she is styled as Edward Scissorhands. The skyscraping skeleton is literally breath-taking. I can hardly imagine how beautiful it must have been to pose with in the flesh. I bet getting into a role isn't so hard when your prop is a fifty foot tall skeletor haha. Oh Tim & Tim! For something with no face, it's pretty emotive in these pictures. It looks so shy and fragile and snappable. This shot is almost unbelievable- Malgosia looks like she's floating in those Nina Ricci platforms. The 'Signs' style corn fields just adds to the creepiness of course. You can't really go wrong with a corn field-unless you're being chased by a winged demon that lives for a month every 12 years ala 'Jeepers Creepers'. In that case the corn field is a no-no and definitely don't ever split up. The skelton falls and bows at his master's feet: Tim Burton poses as a candy coated clown for Tim Walker <3 I love it far too much. HOLY CHRIST. It's amazing and menacing like King Kong without that coating of fluffy flesh swooping down to steal the Las Vegas showgirl princess. Now there's a movie Tim. Tim Burton looking like a homeless Santa Claus slays the fleshless Kong and carries his head in a bag. Walker & Burton should really work together more often...or not. My head could do without exploding every few months...Until they decide to become joined at the him with zombie like Sally from 'Nightmare before Christmas' stitches here is some of Tim Walker's earlier work stored away on the cave like memory of my laptop :) 'A Private World. Balldancing with the dead. Skeletons are a re-occurring theme within Tim Walker's work and I can't help but love it. Another 'A Private World' shot to the left & 'A Magic World' shot to the right. Quite the contrast. Dark, shimmering, metallics with soft backlights & candy coloured pastel stauettes wrapped in powdery gauze. Both just as delicious. And speaking of delicious Tim's model favourite Lily Cole reaching up into the tree of sugary, glazed and chocolate coated fruit :) And a longtime favourite to finish; sandals with socks & plastic dinosaurs=childish sex & the city style fun.
My name is Jasmin but I've always liked boys with girls' names and names that end in -ie.
I'm an insomniac. I like to stay up late to watch the sky change from blue to black to beige and blue again. I'm a critically indecisive realist whose in love with the little things. I enjoy writing lists and schedules but never stick to them. I want to learn to do a million things like speak Swedish, play guitar, skateboard, hula hoop and play poker. My mind is always turning over a million things but I am a simple girl and I never ask for much. I'm a typical nerd and I'm excited by fashion, photography, books, ideas and theories.
I could pour through books and magazines until my eyes dribbled down my face in a torrent of glitter and sequins. It's true.
I like to paint what I write, write what I think and photograph what I see.
